Stromar Offshore Wind Farm Champions STEM Education with ‘Maths into Wind’ Programme

Published: 18/02/2025

Stromar Offshore Wind Farm is proud to announce its sponsorship of TechFest’s ‘Maths into Wind’ programme, an innovative initiative designed to bring mathematics to life for secondary school students across Scotland.

The ‘Maths into Wind’ programme, developed and delivered by Aberdeen-based charity TechFest, gives S2–S4 pupils the chance to see how classroom maths translates into real-world industry applications. The project kicked off with a dedicated event day in Fraserburgh, where students engaged in hands-on STEM activities, including designing their own wind farms and exploring the mechanics of electrical generation. A modular, six-week version of the programme is also being delivered at Bucksburn Academy, offering a flexible, in-depth learning experience tailored to pupils’ needs.

Empowering the Next Generation

By supporting ‘Maths into Wind’, Stromar aims to inspire young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and to demonstrate the vital role that maths plays in the renewable energy sector. The programme enables students to:

Work alongside industry professionals and gain insight into the world of offshore wind
Tackle real-world challenges, such as calculating energy requirements and optimising wind farm layouts
Build confidence and ambition as they develop practical skills for future careers

Nicholas Ritchie, Project Director at Stromar Offshore Wind Farm, said:

“We’re really excited to partner with TechFest on this mission to show students how maths applies in the real world and help them see its practical value. ‘Maths into Wind’ provides a fantastic opportunity for young people to gain hands-on industry experience while building their ambition and confidence as they take their first steps in their career.”

A Lasting Impact

Both the one-day and modular formats of ‘Maths into Wind’ feature interactive presentations, practical demonstrations, and real-world calculations, helping students connect their classroom learning to the energy transition and Scotland’s net zero ambitions. The programme is part of TechFest’s wider ‘Maths into’ series, which also includes ‘Maths into the Energy Mix’ and the forthcoming ‘Maths into Hydrogen’.

Stromar’s Commitment to Communities

Stromar Offshore Wind Farm is committed to supporting education and skills development in the communities where it operates. Through partnerships like this, Stromar is helping to equip the next generation with the knowledge and enthusiasm needed to shape a sustainable future.
